Have you ever worked on something for such a long time that when it’s done you don’t know what to do with yourself? Me. Right. Now. My article on my dissertation research was published last month. I had been writing and editing it for over a year (and doing the research for 3 years prior) so getting it published was a major accomplishment. Before the ink was dry, I was planning my next career and life move.
My son, Moe College, graduates high school in 6 weeks so I’ve also been helping him plan his transition to college. It’s an exciting time, but the waiting is nerve-racking (⚆ _ ⚆). Don’t get me wrong…I know I’m extremely fortunate to soon be the mother of 2 college students! I’ve sacrificed a lot to get to this point, so I’m super excited!!! I just want to know what’s going to happen next, LOL! I’ve come up with a list of things to help cope with the waiting:
1. The first thing is to allow myself to be anxious.
There are some major changes happening in my life. I’ve been raising my son and daughter for nearly 19 years and they’re almost ready to spread their wings. I’ve spent nearly a decade in grad school working on my Master’s and PhD. I’m entering a new chapter and yes it’s both exciting and scary.
2. Be proactive.
Don’t sit around and wait for life to happen. Move confidently in the direction you want to go. *Note to self*
3. Enjoy the wait.
As a single mom in grad school, there were simply things I didn’t have time for. Now that my time is freer, not completely free (I don’t think that ever happens as a mom), use the time to do those things I've always wanted to do. Self-care is a biggie! Get out and exercise, get a mani/pedi, meet up with the girls for brunch, or all of the above!
I’m sure when Moe’s graduation rolls around in 6 weeks and he’s (I’ve) decided which school he’ll be attending in the fall, I’ll ask myself what I was so anxious about?!
